On the other hand, in Latin America, Peru is the country that holds the first place in cases of donovanosis, but cases have also been reported in Argentina, Central America, and French Guiana.
In 1882, this disease was described by McLeod and in 1905 it was Donovan who discovered its causal agent.

If the donovanosis is not treated in time it brings with it serious complications such as:
- Cancer.
- Destruction and deformation of the genital tissue, hence it is known as the "meat-eating disease".
- Narrowing of the vagina, anus and/or urethra.
- Damage to the bones or intestine through the blood.
Different types of donovanosis can be presented:
- Hypertrophic elephantiasis; This is characterized by large formations at the level of the labia majora in women.
- The necrotic, which causes obstruction in the rectum and urethra in the case of men. In its most advanced stages adhere to part of the scrotum and the penis, with the possibility of mutilating it.
- Extragenital lesions are secondary ulcerations in most cases, usually located on the lips, oral or pharyngeal mucosa, face, and neck. If the bacteria spreads through the blood, it can affect the liver, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract; also the bones can be damaged.
Treatment.
This disease is treated with antibiotics, the period of administration is prolonged, because it is finished until all the ulcers disappear.
It is necessary and of great importance that the person has a medical follow-up to avoid relapses and should avoid close contact of other parts of the body with the sores, not have sexual activity and perform the exams that the doctor indicates.
And the most important thing is prevention and use the condom to avoid contracting donovanosis.
